About Story's Land Management in Western North Carolina

Owner-Operated Land Clearing and Drainage Services

Story's Land Management is an owner-operated land clearing and drainage company serving property owners throughout Western North Carolina. When you work with us, you work directly with Kevin Story—a firefighter with 30 years of service who built this business around hands-on expertise in forestry mulching, grading, and drainage systems.

Kevin operates all equipment personally, bringing the same attention to detail he's applied throughout 30 years of firefighting to every land clearing project. You'll find straightforward communication, realistic timelines, and work done right the first time—no surprises, no subcontractors, no hand-off between sales and crew.

We specialize in forestry mulching, land clearing, grading, and drainage installations including silt fence and subsurface drain systems. Each service requires different equipment and planning, and Kevin evaluates every property to determine the most effective approach before starting work. If a project needs drainage correction before clearing or grading work can proceed, you'll know upfront—not halfway through the job.

Whether you're preparing a building site, reclaiming overgrown acreage, or addressing persistent water problems, you'll work with someone who understands how equipment capabilities, terrain, and drainage patterns intersect.

Building a Business Around Heavy Equipment Expertise

Kevin launched Story's Land Management after years of volunteer fire service, recognizing that Western North Carolina property owners needed reliable land clearing and drainage solutions. He built the business part-time around his firefighting schedule, focusing on projects that require equipment proficiency and problem-solving rather than volume-driven quick jobs.

Western North Carolina's terrain presents specific challenges for land management work. Mountain slopes affect drainage patterns, heavy rainfall tests erosion control measures, and dense vegetation requires the right equipment and technique to clear without damaging soil structure or creating runoff problems.

As the region's land clearing market has grown more competitive, Kevin has focused on establishing a niche in higher-complexity drainage and grading projects where experience and equipment skill matter more than price alone. That means taking time to assess each property's elevation changes, water flow, and clearing needs before proposing a solution—and being honest when a project falls outside our capabilities or equipment range.

With retirement from firefighting planned within the next three to five years, Kevin is building toward full-time operations and the capacity to take on larger, more technical projects throughout the region.

What You Experience Working With Story's Land Management

You'll work with Kevin from the initial property walk-through to project completion. He evaluates your land, explains what equipment and techniques will work best for your terrain and vegetation, and provides a clear scope of work before any equipment arrives on site. If drainage issues need addressing before clearing can begin, or if grading will require more extensive work than initially visible, you'll know during the planning stage—not after the project starts.
